Free Micro Course: An Exploration into Diversifying Classroom Texts

Years ago, Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop introduced the concept of making classroom texts more representative of diverse populations. In this course, we will leverage her ideas to help you develop your own guided questions about your classroom library. You’ll explore the value of selecting meaningful texts for your students and how to develop an effective methodology for doing so.

Worth 3 PD hours, this free course gives you strategies to choose texts that are representative of the students you teach and the world you teach about.

Learning Outcomes:

This free micro course enables educators to:

  • Outline different pedagogical approaches to diversifying classroom texts, including multicultural, culturally relevant, culturally responsive, and culturally sustaining.
  • Evaluate the importance of diversifying classroom texts.
  • Assess texts with regard to representation, authorship, context, and content for the purpose of selecting quality representative texts.
  • Evaluate options for increasing representation in texts in specific subject areas.

Upon completion of this micro course, you will receive a certificate from Advancement Courses notating that you’ve received 3 PD hours, at no cost to you.
